You need almost nothing to start Muay Thai, but a little gear makes training more comfortable. Here's a practical, no-pressure guide.
Week one: bring nothing
Seriously. Wear a t-shirt, shorts or athletic pants, and bring water. That's it. Gloves and other equipment can be discussed after your first visit, don't buy anything before you know you love it.
The first purchases
Once training sticks, in rough order of usefulness:
- Hand wraps: protect your wrists and knuckles under the gloves
- Boxing gloves (14–16 oz for class work)
- Comfortable shorts you can kick in: Muay Thai shorts are designed for it
- A mouthguard before any partner drills begin
Shins and other additions
Shin guards matter when partner drills and sparring begin, never before you need them, always before you must. Beyond that, skip the extras: a towel, a water bottle, and slides for off the mat cover most of daily comfort.
A word on buying smart
Ask your coach before ordering gear online. Fit and quality matter, and we'd rather you spend once than twice. Your coaches will recommend what actually fits your training, not what carries a margin.
